Analog vs digital mastering is a debate that has been going on for years in the music production industry. Both analog and digital mastering have their own advantages and disadvantages, and it is important to understand the differences between the two in order to make an informed decision.

Analog mastering is the process of using analog equipment to process a signal to prepare it for distribution. This process involves the use of physical, outboard mastering gear to process the mix. Analog mastering will introduce a sound into the recording which is generated from the analog circuitry of the equipment. It will thicken the recording and all the instruments within it, often times accentuating upper harmonic. This process also adds a warmth to the recording that is difficult to achieve with digital mastering.

Digital mastering, on the other hand, is the process of using solely digital processors and software to process a signal and for the same reason. This process involves the use of software and plugins to process the mix. Digital mastering can achieve a similar results to analog mastering with the aid of UAD analogue emulation. Digital mastering achieves a particular sound that some electronic producers have come accustomed to.

 

When deciding between analog and digital mastering, it is important to consider the type of sound you are trying to achieve. Analog mastering will provide a warmer sound, while digital mastering will provide a more modern sound. Additionally, analog mastering is more expensive than digital mastering, so it is important to consider your budget when making a decision.
